It’s no secret that Cannabis is legal in the United States in a lot of states. Medical Cannabis can have a lot of amazing pro’s but it also can have a lot of cons depending on the person. In Michigan, you can get a Medical cannabis card when you’re eighteen years old. If you don’t have a medical card, you cannot buy it till you’re twenty one years old.

What is Medical Cannabis?

Medical cannabis, also known as medical marijuana, is the use of cannabis and its compounds to treat or alleviate symptoms of certain medical conditions. Cannabis is a plant that contains more than 100 different chemical compounds, called cannabinoids, of which the most well-known is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is responsible for the plant’s psychoactive effects.

Cannabis has been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years, and today, medical cannabis is increasingly being used to treat a variety of conditions such as chronic pain, multiple sclerosis, and nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy. It also can help with symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, and depression.

Pros of Medical Cannabis

  1. Pain relief: has been shown to be effective in reducing chronic pain, particularly neuropathic pain, which is caused by damage to the nervous system.
  2. Nausea and vomiting: can help to reduce nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy and other medical treatments.
  3. Muscle spasms: has been shown to be effective in reducing muscle spasms and stiffness associated with conditions such as multiple sclerosis.
  4. Seizures: has been shown to be effective in reducing the frequency and severity of seizures in some individuals with certain forms of epilepsy.
  5. Appetite stimulation: can help to stimulate appetite and reduce weight loss in individuals with conditions such as HIV/AIDS and cancer.
  6. PTSD and anxiety: has been shown to be effective in reducing symptoms of PTSD and anxiety in some individuals.
  7. Depression: has been shown to be effective in reducing symptoms of depression in some individuals.
  8. Sleep: has been shown to be effective in improving sleep in some individuals with conditions such as insomnia.

Cons of Medical Cannabis

  1. Psychoactive effects: Cannabis contains the chemical compound THC, which can produce psychoactive effects, such as feeling “high” or euphoric, confusion, and alterations in perception and mood.
  2. Dependence: Long-term use of cannabis can lead to dependence and addiction, especially in individuals with a history of substance use disorder.
  3. Lung problems: Smoking or vaporizing medical cannabis can lead to lung problems, such as bronchitis and lung infections.
  4. Cardiovascular problems: Cannabis can increase the risk of cardiovascular problems, such as heart attack and stroke, especially in older adults or those with a history of heart disease.
  5. Mental health: Cannabis can exacerbate symptoms of certain mental health conditions, such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and can increase the risk of developing these conditions in some individuals.
  6. Reduced cognitive function: Medical cannabis can impair cognitive function, such as memory, attention, and decision-making, especially in younger individuals whose brains are still developing.
