10 Free Things To Do in Lansing

I’ve been in Michigan for over a year now and there’s still a big part of Lansing that I haven’t explored. For the State Capital, there is a lot of free things to do for families, couples and a lot more. One thing I always look for is free things to do in an area because if you can save money but still have fun, its the best. This is 10 Free Things To Do in Lansing, Michigan.

The River Trail

The River Trail is about 13 miles (21km) long which runs along the Grand River and the Red Cedar River between Michigan State University and Northern Lansing. You can hike, bike, run or even rollar blade the whole trail. It’s walk-ability is pretty easy and it’s not that difficult. This walking trail can be used all year round but please beware of flooding, ice and a number of other things.
I have walked about 3 miles of this trail and it’s one of my favorite places to walk around Lansing.

State Capitol

Michigan State Capitol opened on the 1st of January and it’s one of the first state capitols to be topped by a lofty cast iron dome. You can go on a guided tour or else a self guided tour which both are free. Guided tours are: 9:00am to 4:00pm Monday through to Friday and Self Guided Tours are: 8:00am to 4:00pm Monday through to Friday. The State Capitol is closed on Saturdays and Sundays and also closed on Public Holidays.

Carl G. Fenner Nature Center

The Fenner Nature Center is an environmental educational center that is open to the whole public. The center itself has 134 acres of green space for the public which includes four miles of trails, rolling glacial eskers, and towering maple groves. You will also find a lot of native reptiles and amphibians, a viewing area to watch birds, and other animals. You will also have an opportunity to explore hand on exhibits. The park and trails are open from 8am to dusk every day but the visitor center is open 12:00pm to 6:00pm Tuesday through to Friday and 9:00am to 3:00pm Saturday through to Sunday.
