What Are My Choices of Birth Control?

The topic of birth control can be sensitive, and many women may not be fully aware of the available options. While preventing pregnancy is a common reason for using birth control, there are also other motivations. In this post, I will explore the different birth controls. It’s important to note that what works for one individual may not necessarily work for someone else.

The Implant

The Nexplanon, also known as the birth control implant, is a slim rod that is similar in size to a matchstick. When inserted into your arm by a healthcare professional, it releases hormones that prevent pregnancy for a period of up to 5 years. This form of birth control requires no maintenance, making it a convenient “set it and forget it” option.

IUD

An intrauterine device (IUD) is a small contraceptive device that is inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. With its long-lasting and reversible nature, the IUD is considered one of the most effective forms of birth control available.

Types of IUD
  • Paragard,
  • Mirena,
  • Kyleena,
  • Liletta, and
  • Skyla.

Birth Control Shot

Depo-Provera, also known as the depo shot, is a birth control injection that is administered once every three months. This method is safe, convenient, and offers privacy, especially for those who prefer not to use daily birth control methods. However, it is crucial to receive the injection on time to ensure its effectiveness.

Birth Control Vaginal Ring

The vaginal ring, also known as the birth control ring, is a safe and convenient method of contraception. It is highly effective when used correctly and consistently. To use this method, a small and flexible ring is inserted into the vagina, where it releases hormones that prevent pregnancy 24/7. Aside from being an effective contraceptive, the ring also offers several other health benefits. There are two types of birth control rings available: NuvaRing and Annovera.

Birth Control Patch

The contraceptive patch is a secure and convenient birth control method that is highly effective if used correctly. It involves wearing a small patch on specific parts of the body, which then releases hormones through the skin to prevent pregnancy. Additionally, this method offers several health benefits.

In the United States, there are two brands of birth control patches available: the Xulane patch and the Twirla patch.

Condom

Condoms are elastic, thin pouches that are worn on the penis during sexual activity. They are highly effective in preventing both pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. Condoms are readily available and simple to use.

Birth Control Pill

Birth control pills are a type of medication that contains hormones. They are typically packaged in a set, with one pill to be taken each day. When used correctly, this method is considered safe, affordable, and highly effective in preventing pregnancy. In addition to its contraceptive properties, the pill also offers numerous other health benefits.

Types
  • Combination pills (aka combined oral contraceptives, or COCs)
  • Progestin-only pills (aka POPs or mini pills)

Internal Condom

Internal condoms, also known as “female” condoms, are an alternative to traditional condoms that provide similar protection against both pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. However, unlike regular condoms that are worn on the penis, internal condoms are inserted inside the vagina for contraception or in the vagina or anus for protection against STDs. While they were once referred to as “female condoms,” it’s essential to note that individuals of any gender can use them for vaginal or anal sex.
